Researcher's Eye Make-up Suggestions to Help Avoid Spring Dry Eye

Dry Eye is Most Common is Spring and Eye Make-up Can Make Dry Eye Worse Says Water and Eye Researcher Sharon Kleyne

With dry eye complaints increasing worldwide, individuals who wear eye make-up might wonder if products such as mascara and eye liner could become a contributing factor in dry eye symptoms. Water and eye researcher Sharon Kleyne recently offered several tips to improve the safety of eye make-up use and reduce the chances of eye make-up causing dry eye symptoms or any other eye problems.

Many people who wear cosmetic eye make-up such as mascara and eye liner, says Kleyne, could eventually find that these applications make their eyes feel tired and uncomfortable, especially in situations stressful to eyes such as staying up late, spending hours at a computer, or drinking and smoking. Springtime is especially problematic because of increased solar radiation and greatly increased amounts of eye irritating allergens in the air.

According to Kleyne, a common method of relieving eye discomfort and dry eye symptoms is to apply formulated eye drops. Kleyne cautions that applying eye drops while wearing eye make-up might not always be a good idea. When eye drops are applied, some of the formulation may end up on the eyelid. If there is make-up on the eyelid, the drops could dissolve the make-up and mix with it. The mixture of eye drops and make-up could - and often does - flow back into the eyes, causing additional irritation and redness and increasing dry eye sensitivity. Mrs. Kleyne notes that this is most likely when wearing glitter and/or powder that has flaked or clumped.

Sharon Kleyne - and the American Academy of Ophthalmology - offers several tips on the safe and healthy use of eye make-up. They are applicable to everyone who uses eye make-up, whether or not they have dry eye symptoms (http://www.geteyesmart.org/eyesmart/living/eye-makeup.cfm).

The first and most important suggestion is to ever share eye make-up. The AAO and Sharon Kleyne also strongly advise throwing away eye make-up after three months because bacteria can grow in it and eye make-up in one of the most common sources of eye infections. For those who tend to be allergic, introduce only one new eye product at a time to be sure there is no reaction.

Other suggestions: Always cleanse your face before applying make-up. Never use sharp objects to separate clumped mascara. Never apply make-up in a moving vehicle or in a situation where you are likely to bounce around. If you tend to have dry eyes or if you wear contact lenses, avoid glitter and powder. And finally, remove all eye make-up before sleeping

Nature's Tears® EyeMist® from Bio-Logic Aqua Research is a 100% fresh water application that relieves dry eye symptoms by adding much needed water to dry and irritated eyes. This is achieved without melting the eye make-up or causing it to run. As an extra benefit, the all-natural, fresh water mist instantly revitalizes faded make-up colors.
